Mom & Me Classes...Dads, too!
For 3 - 6 year olds and accompanying parent, this six week course is designed to introduce the youngest riders to the thrill of interacting with horses.  One hour a week, parent and child work together to groom a horse and learn the basics of safety and riding under the guidance of a certified instructor.  The parent leads the horse while the child learns the beginning movements of riding.  Lesson plans, educational materials and coloring activities are also included.

Young children learn there's more to horses than just getting on and riding. (There's hauling around heavy tack, too!)

Mom & Me Classes - What Can I Expect?
Learning balance & confidence!
Week One - Your first lesson will cover basic safety rules & procedures for working around horses.  You and your child will learn how to approach, halter, lead, groom and tack-up your horse.  This first lesson is a group demonstration with all students given an opportunity to try for themselves and ask questions. There is no riding the first week.

Week Two - Each child/parent will get their own pony and will learn how to mount & dismount; stop, start & turn while performing basic arena maneuvers.

Week Three
- You and your child will learn the importance of a balanced & secure seat: and inside/outside rein as you ride around bending poles and over ground poles.

Week Four - Riding games are used to build confidence and practice newly learned skills; you will learn the patterns of barrel racing, pole bending; two-point position and the importance of arena letter markers.

Week Five - After a warm-up in the arena, you will experience light trail riding around the property and learn how to ride up and down hills.

Week Six - Show Day!  Invite your family and friends over and show them what you have learned over the last six weeks!  There will be ribbons and certificates of completion awarded for all riders.

The Young Rider

Although every student of riding has his or her own unique personality, there are certain age characteristics worth understanding as they pertain to the ability to ride.

"Mom & Me" classes typically have children from ages 3 to 6 years and some students may be "ahead" or "behind" their age group in developmental skills and riding experiences.

"Mom & Me' classes are designed for this young group with appropriate lesson plans and the flexibility to adapt to individual needs as the lessons transpire.  We cater to your child's unique needs!

Age Characteristics of 3 - 6 year olds

Physically

  • Are developing hand-eye coordination
  • Lack balance
  • Are still developing large muscles
  • Lack small muscle control
  • Are very energetic for short bursts of time
Emotionally
  • Are egocentric - the center of their own universe
  • Respond to immediate reward for appropriate action or discipline for inappropriate action
  • Need to feel safe, secure and protected
  • Believe adults know everything, especially their parents
Socially
  • Are aware only of their own point of view
  • Are friends with everybody
  • Trust whatever is said to them is correct
Intellectually

How this all relates to Horses and Riding
  • May react by being extremely happy or extremely scared around horses
  • Lose focus and/or attention quickly; rides should be short in length
  • Have little actual control of the horse; lead line with parent is a must!
  • Lack balance and can easily slide off!
  • Need the constant attention of the parent!
