Kids Horsin' Around promotes the teaching of nationally accepted horsemanship practices in a safe and fun environment for riders of all ages.
Lessons are presented in a clear and progressive manner designed to develop skills and build confidence in beginning riders.
Arena work is based on an on-going assessment of the rider's understanding of previous lessons and is presented in fun and interesting ways to stimulate and motivate learning at all levels.
All riders progress at varying rates and aspire to different dreams and are encouraged to discuss and set goals for short-, medium- and long-term riding aims.
A well rounded education in horsemanship begins with a solid understanding and comfortable application of ground work. All riders are expected to learn from the beginning how to handle horses from the ground. This includes working safely around horses, approaching, haltering & leading; basic grooming, saddling & bridling.
Learning the parts of tack and major conformation points of the horse are seamlessly integrated into every rider's experience.
Basic arena maneuvers and arena equipment (i.e. ground poles, cavaletti, bending poles, barrels and dressage letters) are incorporated into lessons at every level.

The basis of all good riding begins with a balanced and secure seat. This is the rider's first goal - an independent seat from which clear communication can be directed to and received from the horse. It is why we spend a lot of time in posture alignment!!
While learning to ride the natural gaits - walk, trot & canter - the rider begins to develop a feel for the rhythm, movement and balance in the horse and self.
The rider is always encouraged to strive for quality while learning a new skill rather than rushing ahead to perform a poorly executed, advanced maneuver.

Learning to work with the nature of the horse is a critical component of horsemanship at Kids Horsin' Around. Riders are instructed how to work around horses in a way that gains respect from the horse. They shouldn't fear us, nor should they be allowed to dominate and push us around.
